    Church of Narga Selassie, Dek Island, Lake Tana, Ethiopia. Late 18th century. St. George is Ethiopia's patron saint. The woman in the tree on the right symbolizes Ethiopia, and is always present in Ethiopian Orthodox paintings of this scene.

    St. George is Ethiopia's patron saint. The person in the tree directly in front of and above the horse's head is said to personify Ethiopia. As usual, the horse is looking very perky. I saw variations on this image in almost every church I visited in Ethiopia.

    I regret I didn't capture more of St. George and what must surely have been a splendid horse. However, I hope this dragon, surely the most elaborately rendered of any I saw in Ethiopia, will make up for the disappointment.
