On the verso of the second fore guard leaf is an index of 20 miracles to be read on particular feasts. Copied for Walda Sellas5 (prayer, f. 63 b and passim ). The name of the Emperor has been scratched out, wherever it occurs, and has been replaced by that of Haile Selassie I, while other names have been substituted by those of Ras Makonnen and Empress Manan. According to Dr. Sergew Hable Selassie, however, the original name of the Emperor Yohannes can be made out on f. 32b (invisible on the film). Dr. Sergew supposes this to be Yohannes III (l84l-2), but I would rather suppose Yohannes IV (1872-89). 24 EMML Pr. No. 22, cont. It is unclear whether the name of the Regent, King Tafari/Haile Selassie in the titles of the miniatures, ff. 99b and 159 b, is original or substituted.
