EMML 728, fol. 120b — Miniatures

F. 120b: St. George praying to the Virgin Mary, who is surrounded by cherubs. Sketches for miniatures: (1) F. 106b: St. George mounted on his horse. (2) F. 108a: A scribe writing (the life of the saint). Copied for Ras Walda Giyorgis (Prince of Goggam and later King of Gondar) and his wife, Wayzaro Yasimmabet/Walatta Maryam (colophon, f. 290a). Purchased for $100 by Tessamme Argaw and given by her to the Church of St. George/Gannata §ege, 7 Hedar 1930 E.C. (= l6 November 1937 A.D. - note, f. 290b). She also had the 7 miniatures painted (the same note). Stamp of the Church of St. George, ff. 2a and 296b. Ff. la, 8ab, llab, l4ab, l8ab, 21ab, 25a, 29ab, 32ab, 35ab, 38ab, 42ab, 45b, 4-7ab, 50ab, 52ab, 55ab, 60ab, 62ab, 65b, 67ab, 72ab, 74ab, 80ab, 82b, 112b, 120a and 297at> blank. Most of these were probably 32 EMML Pr. No. 728, cont. intended to be filled by miniatures that were never painted, for there are also numerous spaces left blank in the middle of ff. 85b, 87b, 88b, etc., obviously for miniatures. The text is occasionally difficult to read because of ink penetration and also because the film is at times underexposed. Ff. 25b, 45a, 90b, l64b-l65a and 197b-198a filmed twice. 33
