Photo 5. The upper part of this photograph shows the forested slopes of Entoto mountain which forms the northern boundary of Addis Ababa . The entire central and northern part of the city are built on sloping terrain drained by rather deeply entrenched streams that separate one section of the city from another . In this photo Tekle Haimanot Church is in the lower left hand corner , and the rather open group of buildings in the left centre is the central district of Arada. Above this, showing as a white open space , is the famous racecourse of Jan Hoy Meda . Notice here also that although this is a photo of the heart of the city the dark patches of eucalyptus trees dominate much of the picture .

Photo 6. Towards evening Addis Ababa becomes enshrouded in the fragrant bluish -grey smoke issuing forth from the cooking fires used to prepare the evening meal. When the evening coolness approaches the streets become empty as people gather for their supper. Later the blue smoke settles among the enticing smells of cooking food on each small street and lane .
