Photo 20. The importance of Churchill Street can be seen in this general view . The street is a nearly straight line that crosses the photo from the bottom to near the top . Note how all the streets of the south con- verge at Adowa Square before Churchill Street goes northward and then curves slightly to the right as it reaches the Piazza region . The orderly , nearly rectan- gular pattern of the southern part of the city shows clearly in this photo . Churchill Street is now one of the most highly travelled streets in the city and as traffic increases yearly it is evident that the city plan to build parallel roads to the east and west of Churchill to relieve traffic will be a wise programme .

Photo 21. A whole new axis of development , cut- ting across the southern part of the city , shows in this photograph . Field-Marshal Smuts Street , or the air- port road , starts in the bottom of the picture and goes directly towards the top . Many interesting places can be seen in this photo . The octagonal roof of Lideta Church , one of the many older churches built in the traditional style , is in the lower right hand corner . The saw-toothed shaped building is the large Enwari Works where buses are kept in repair . The curved building to the left is the Ministry of Commerce and

Photo 22. This photo shows the park -like character of the Parliament Zone of Addis Ababa where space is utilised lavishly and trees and open areas abound . The modern Parliament building , with its familiar clock tower , can easily be seen . The large, ornate , Sellassie Cathedral is to the left surrounded by regular groves of eucalyptus trees which serve as a restful setting for the graves of Ethiopian patriots . The four -part building in the bottom centre is the new Theological College which is just across the curving street from the library and offices of University College . Aerial views of Addis Ababa truly show many characteristics of the city that the earth-bound person can hardly visualise . Yet , if one drives to the site of Old Entoto or Entoto Pass , the city spreads out below you in a kaleidoscopic panorama as interesting and as educational as any photograph . Addis Ababa , capital of Ethiopia and seat of the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa , is truly one of the leading cities of inde- pendent Africa today . Views from the air show modern development , growth and city planning that can serve
