Photo 1.1 The Simien Mountains, a dissected large shield volcano, as seen from the western edge of Dogu’a Tembien, 80 km away. Exhumed Palaeozoic peneplains in the Tekezze valley occupy the area between the two massifs (note Imba Meskel, an isolated Mesozoic sandstone hill or butte in the middle of the scene).
