Photo 20.5 Landslide affecting the northern slope of Imba Ra’isot. The main landslide scar in light pink, deposition belt in dark pink (indicated by ‘S’ in Fig. 20.1). The old landslide lobe contains blocks of rock and hummocky earth masses showing stratigraphy in reverse sense of the general slope, resulting from backward rotational slumping during the slide movement. The lobe has been affected by a secondary debris flow, not indicated in Fig. 20.1 because of its small scale. The secondary flow has been reactivated in the rainy seasons of 1998 and again in 2000. The lobe (depositional zone) crossed the road Mekelle—Hagere Selam during the rainy season of 2000. A scar of the secondary landslide, in the centre of the picture, is located within a recent exclosure. Together with water-harvesting trenches on the slopes, the vegetation may have contributed to increased rain infiltration and hence an increase in soil water pore pressure during the rainy season, what facilitated sliding.
