Photo 22.1 Example of a rapidly expanding gully in May Be’ati. The Oxford Dictionary of Earth Sciences (2008), defines a gully as a “feature of water erosion that develops from the runoff of a violent torrent that bites deeply into topsoil and soft sediments”. Gully erosion can thus be associated with the rapid incision of landscapes by the erosive action of flash floods. Since the photo was taken, the gully has been controlled using check dams with plastic subsurface dams. Photo Amaury Frankl (2011)
