The 1941 map was compiled from some Italian maps available to British and South African cartographers during war time, and even the 1984 map reused many elements of those maps dating back to the 1930s, though the mule track pattern for long distance transportation had become largely disused. Topographic detail of the Soviet map is remarkably better than that of earlier and later maps
