Figure 5. A gold coin of the Christian Axumite king Ousanas in the second half of the fi fth century ad . He appears with a turret-crown on the obverse, and, on the reverse, the headcloth traditionally associated with Ethiopian kings. Th e legends are in Greek on either side of a cross, with King Ousanas named on the obverse and “the grace of God” on the reverse. Nothing is known of this king beyond his coinage, but it infl uenced the issues and self-representation of Kāl ē b, who added Ethiopic script.
