Reconstructing
the Great Temple

The Great Temple still rises to roughly fourteen metres in finely dressed limestone. This reconstruction follows the masonry, pillar seats, mortises, paving and drainage that survive—then marks every proposed element for what it is.

Research note · 01

A reconstruction that shows its evidence

What survives. The dry-laid limestone shell, dressed margins, parts of the denticular frieze, pillar seats, internal bases, mortises, paving, drains and later baptistery can still be read in the building.

What is reconstructed. The western propylon, timber doorway, internal supports, eastern partitions, covered side aisles and open centre are restored from the surviving traces and comparative architectural study.

What remains unknown. The exact roof, complete upper-storey circulation, colours, altar, furniture and original ibex-frieze position are not fixed facts. They remain removable study layers.

Interpretive plan, not a survey drawing. The central longitudinal space is shown open; covered side aisles run beside it.

Walk from west to east

  1. Climb the stepped podium. The wide base levels a building set directly over irregular tuff bedrock.
  2. Pass through the propylon. Six surviving pillar positions establish a monumental porch, while the full columns and roof are reconstructed.
  3. Enter between timber doors. Mortises secure the interpretation of a broad frame; precise joinery is unknown.
  4. Read five aisles. Twelve supports divide the interior, with an open central space and covered sides.
  5. Approach the eastern chambers. Mortises and fire traces define timber-framed divisions around a central cella.
  6. Follow the water. Channels cross the floor and meet the outlet in the southern wall.

    Bedrock and stepped podium

    The cutaway follows the measured slope without inventing buried chambers. At least seven steps are reported at the western approach.

    Outer and inner masonry shells

    The smooth margins and pecked centres are represented at architectural scale, not as a scan. Cutaway mode separates the two shells so their construction can be read. Shown as a source-based interpretation rather than a measured third shell everywhere.

    The exploded view pulls representative headers out from the wall.

    B · Strongly reconstructed

    Western propylon and doorway

    The surviving positions are certain; the full height is reconstructed. A strong reconstruction, but not a surviving colonnade. The mortises survive; the beam profiles do not. The precise joinery and decoration are unknown.

    Twelve supports divide five aisles

    Eleven of twelve dressed bases were recorded in position in the assessment.

    Eastern chambers and timber frames

    The middle room is interpreted as the cella and the flanking rooms as cult spaces. The preserved platform and steps are represented without filling it with invented cult objects. The framing position is evidence-led; infill and finish are restrained reconstructions.

    Covered sides and proposed upper level

    Coverage is strongly reconstructed; the exact roof build-up is not preserved. Its circulation, façade treatment and complete appearance remain unknown. No temple roof survives; material, parapet and drainage details are hypotheses.

    Open centre, paving and drainage

    Its rainwater channels support an open central area, though the exact roof edge is unknown. The sources disagree over sandstone panels and tuff paving; the model uses neutral stone. They are consistent with rain entering the central space; no ritual purpose is claimed. Its course is observed; the complete original outlet profile is reconstructed.

ATuff bedrock

The temple stands on an irregular natural tuff surface that lies close below the western paving and falls towards the east.

ALimestone ashlar walls

Finely dressed limestone blocks were laid without mortar in precise horizontal courses.

ADouble wall shells

Parallel inner and outer faces form the north, south and west walls.

BThicker eastern wall

The east wall may use an additional row or wider blocks where the ground falls away.

ABond headers

Perpendicular stones connect the masonry shells at intervals and lock the wall together.

APropylon foundations and pillar seats

Rock-cut seats and excavated foundations mark a monumental porch west of the entrance.

BSix-pillar western propylon

Six rectangular pillars carry a roofed entrance porch reconstructed from the surviving seats and building analysis.

BBroad timber entrance frame

Mortises around the damaged western doorway indicate a substantial frame, probably timber secured to the stone.

ATwelve internal supports

Four longitudinal rows of three supports divide the hall into five aisles.

Two channels join near the south side and carry water towards the wall outlet.

A carved conduit passes through the south wall, now within a damaged area.

ADouble denticular frieze

Two rows of stone dentils survive near the tops of the north, south and east façades.

ALater Christian baptistery

A circular baptismal installation was inserted in the south-eastern area during later Christian use.

Carved ibex fragments survive in the nearby church, but their original architectural position is uncertain.
