A mountain monastery founded by Abba Filəppos that became a major centre of the Ewostatean monastic movement and manuscript culture.
Däbrä Bizän was founded in the later fourteenth century by Filəppos, an important leader in the monastic network associated with Ewostatewos. Its position high above the route toward the Red Sea gave the community an unusually commanding and secluded setting.
The monastery developed religious and political influence and preserved an important manuscript tradition. Its history belongs to a connected medieval landscape that crossed today’s Ethiopian–Eritrean boundary.
Why this place matters
Däbrä Bizän was central to medieval monastic reform in the northern highlands, the transmission of Geʿez learning, and the intellectual life of Medri Bahri.
