A ceremonial and elite landscape with shrine-like buildings, monolithic pillars, stelae, sculpture, bronzes and inscriptions.
Excavations at Hawǝlti–Melazo documented quadrangular monumental structures, pillars and stelae alongside ceramics, figurines, limestone sculpture, metalwork and inscribed objects. The assemblage marks the site as more than an ordinary settlement.
Because the material predates Aksum’s imperial height, it helps trace the religious, artistic and political practices from which later highland traditions developed.
Why this place matters
The site gives archaeological depth to the centuries before Aksum and reveals experimentation in monument, image and ritual.
