A major pre-Aksumite and Aksumite settlement whose excavated buildings, inscriptions and objects reveal a long urban history.
Archaeological work at Mätära documented occupation extending from pre-Aksumite phases through the Aksumite period. The site included elite buildings, ordinary houses, inscriptions and later churches, with interruptions and rebuilding visible in its strata.
Its remains help scholars compare urban life beyond Aksum itself. The evidence shows that the ancient highland world was a network of substantial centres, not a history confined to one capital.
Why this place matters
Mätära preserves one of the clearest archaeological sequences for the southern Eritrean highlands and broadens the map of Aksumite urbanism.
