Qohayto

Qohaito

ancient history

Period
Aksumite period
Place
Akkälä Guzay plateau

A vast archaeological landscape of settlement clusters, podium buildings, cisterns, tombs, churches, inscriptions and roads.

Qohayto is best understood as a broad plateau landscape rather than one compact city. Surveys have recorded hundreds of ruins and ruined complexes spread across the high ground, including substantial buildings and water-storage works.

The density and variety of remains show how settlement, agriculture, movement and elite display were organised across an Aksumite highland landscape beyond the royal capital.

Why this place matters

Qohayto replaces a capital-centred picture with evidence for a densely occupied regional landscape and its infrastructure.
