A dedicated Habesha History article about Toḫondaʿ is being prepared.

A hilltop and slope settlement with inscriptions and substantial pillared podium buildings recorded by the German Aksum expedition.

The settlement at Toḫondaʿ extends across a hilltop and its slopes. Early survey recorded inscriptions and three large Aksumite buildings, including podium structures organised around rows of pillars.

Some scholars have proposed identifying it with ancient Coloë, but that remains a hypothesis rather than an established fact. The site is presented here under its documented local archaeological name.

Why this place matters

Toḫondaʿ adds another substantial settlement to the network between Mätära, Qohayto and the northern highlands.
