A built church inside a vast natural cave, preserving timber-and-stone construction, carving and painting associated with the Zagwe period.
Unlike Lalibela’s monolithic churches, Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos is a constructed building standing within a cave. Its walls alternate timber and white stone in a tradition derived from Aksumite architecture, while carved wood, painted surfaces and nearby structures complete the ensemble.
The church is traditionally connected to the Zagwe king of the same name. Its exact chronology remains debated, so the map describes the likely range rather than presenting a single disputed date as settled.
Why this place matters
The church shows how Aksumite architectural memory was transformed in medieval Lasta, alongside the rock-hewn experiments at Lalibela.
