What the record shows
On March 1, 1896, Ethiopian forces commanded by Emperor Menelik II defeated the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa. It was the first time an African nation had defeated a European power. The Ethiopian victory at Adwa prevented the Italians from establishing imperial rule over Ethiopia then. However, forty years later the Italians conquered Ethiopia and established the short-lived colony of Africa Orientale Italiana (Italian East Africa). The colony existed from 1936 through mid-1941, when the Italians were expelled permanently.
