What this record describes
Full-page miniature of the evangelist Luke in ink and tempera on vellum, painted c. 1440–80 in the Tigray region of the Empire of Ethiopia, with Luke's symbol, the ox, set within the arch above. The leaf shows the bright colors and joyous interplay of geometric pattern typical of Ethiopian panel and manuscript painting. Its short text is in Geʿez, the centuries-old church language of Ethiopian Orthodoxy, and records a dedication of the image of St Luke.
