How the manuscript catalogue knows what it knows

The gallery shows actual artwork only when the exact image and its display rights are verified. The larger research inventory remains documented here without turning text-only records into picture cards.

A short evidence chain

  1. 01
    Identify

Use a stable painting ID, shelfmark, accession or catalogue entry.

  2. 02
    Describe

Transcribe the specialist or repository description without adding a school, workshop or province.

  3. 03
    Display

Show an image only when the exact object and a usable rights statement are both confirmed.

These sources provide the stable record identifiers and the majority of item-level descriptions.

British Library Archives and Manuscripts Catalogue — Ethiopian Manuscripts

British Library

All 331 Ethiopian manuscript catalogue records are indexed, including the 247 that currently expose official IIIF manifests. Conservatively extracted catalogue art folios are attached with source backlinks; ambiguous and uncatalogued page-level art remains marked for visual audit.

Zenodo2022

PEMM version 1.0 research dataset

Wendy Laura Belcher and the PEMM team

The versioned data release used for painting IDs, scenes, manuscript dates, repositories and source links.

Scholarship converted into traceable records

Article evidence is indexed with its qualifiers and disagreements intact.

Repository provenance and object records

Holding institutions remain the authority for accession, rights and present custody.

Research discovery, with a verification gate

Upload platforms can surface relevant papers, but their snippets and copies do not replace the publication or collection record.

ResearchGate / Academia.eduDiscovery only

Ethiopian manuscript painting research uploads

ResearchGate and Academia.edu contributors

Used to locate publications, never as the final authority for an item. Claims must be confirmed in a paper, dataset or holding-institution record before publication.

A catalogue record is not an image licence

Source-only records are intentional. When a paper or catalogue confirms an artwork but does not grant reusable image rights, the site links to the source and does not substitute a neighbouring folio. ResearchGate and Academia.edu are used to discover scholarship, never to establish an item claim by themselves.
