Every photograph, painting and plate on this site that somebody else made, with the licence it is published under and a way back to the record it came from.
Writing about an image
If you hold rights in a picture on this site, or a credit here is wrong, or a picture should not be published at all, write to the publication and say which image it is and the page you found it on. The publication has no separate contact address; the surest route is a note through Habesha History on Substack , and the Discord and the other channels are on the socials page. A picture that should not be here will be taken down.
The games
A photograph of the carved hall at Däbrä Dammo, a manuscript folio of players, an illustration of the board, a newspaper lithograph of the empress, and the one surviving photograph of the game being played. Each of them is served from this site's own domain rather than the holder's, so the obligations that come with them are this site's to meet.

Board games in a painted Ethiopian manuscript folio
British Library Ethiopian collections
Changed before publishing Lanczos-3 resampling to a 3840px master (3.6x the 1080px source); gentle unsharp (sigma 1.1) on the master only; no repainting, recolouring, cropping or content edits of any kind
Immutable owner-supplied copy. A painted manuscript folio of board-game players — senterej at a table on the left, gäbäṭa held out on the right, smaller boards below. Circulated as part of the British Library's Ethiopian manuscript collections; the exact shelfmark is not recorded in the copy the owner supplied, so the credit names the collection and claims no more.

crop of a public-domain 1896 colour newspaper lithograph — not a photograph
Changed before publishing 1:1 crop at (786, 1430), 2048x2048px of the original; Lanczos-3 down-sampling to each published width; light unsharp (sigma 0.7) on the down-sampled widths only; no repainting, recolouring, retouching or content edits of any kind

Santaraj, traditional Ethiopian chess, early twentieth century
Changed before publishing Digitally restored, upscaled and colourised from the original black-and-white source. The colour is an interpretation and is not documentary.
Santaraj, or traditional Ethiopian chess, as played by the nobility. An early twentieth-century photograph, identified as Dajazmach Ali, centre, and Dajazmach Gabra Sellasé, right, in Richard Pankhurst and Denis Gérard, Ethiopia Photographed (1996), plate 246; credited there to Lincoln de Castro, Nella terra dei Negus (Milano, 1915). Digitally restored, upscaled and colourised from the original black-and-white source. The colour is an interpretation and is not documentary.
Works the site's own artwork was drawn from
The ruler portraits, the court halls and the turned pieces were drawn for this site and are its own work. Where a drawing was modelled on a catalogued object or a printed plate rather than imagined, the thing it was modelled on is named here.

The journeys
The six wide photographs a reader travels through on the front page, and the halls behind two of the Senterej boards. Unlike the atlas galleries these are copied onto this site's own servers and re-encoded, which is why the crop and the encoding are stated with each one.

The reading room
Three Habesha manuscript paintings stand on the desks in /ask. They were chosen and supplied by the publication's owner, and the record of where they came from stops at the host that served them. That is set down here as it stands rather than tidied.

Figures shown with a quiz question are reproduced from the scholarly publications named beneath each one, and the credit is printed with the figure rather than gathered here. The typefaces are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, and the licences are served with them. Portraits, court halls and piece carvings drawn for this site are its own work; where they were modelled on a catalogued object or a printed plate, that source is listed under the games above.
